DigiCert S/MIME Email Certificates

With S/MIME, you get a public and private key pair. Sent messages get signed by your secret private key, and the same key decrypts messages others send to you. Your shared public key encrypts messages so you’re the only one who can read them while allowing people receiving your messages to verify your signature to know the email came from you.

Attackers who spoof company emails as part of phishing schemes send malicious messages that trick users into thinking the email came from the company or even from a specific employee. When attackers succeed at scamming customers, the organization loses business and racks up expenses in fraud losses and support costs.

Encryption is required in many industries that frequently send sensitive data via email, including retail, insurance, healthcare, and the defense industrial base. One example is the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which requires that cardholder data be rendered unreadable anywhere it’s stored. Before you order, we recommend generating a certificate signing request (CSR), an encoded file that offers a standardized way to share your public key with DigiCert, along with information identifying your company and domain name.
